The Urban Livelihoods Assessment Report 2024 assesses the livelihoods of urban refugees and host communities in Makindye division, Kampala, Uganda, as part of the Livelihoods Improvement and Transformation for Refugees and Host Communities in Kampala (LIFT) Project commissioned by Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The report highlights the challenges and opportunities faced by these communities, focusing on employment, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion. Key findings show that 36.8% of respondents have not acquired any skills since leaving formal education, resulting in limited employability. Low income levels, lack of access to credit, language barriers, and discrimination are identified as major obstacles. Women particularly struggle with limited access to financial resources, competition from male-dominated businesses, and harassment. The report recommends language skilling programs, alternative financial mechanisms, partnerships with local authorities for business licensing, and providing start-up kits to improve livelihoods. It concludes that tailored support is needed to enable refugees and host communities to overcome barriers, access employment opportunities, and promote social cohesion through collaborative efforts.
